A female southern white rhino , Ol Pejeta 2022

Listed as near threatened by the IUCN, southern white rhinos were introduced into Ol Pejeta in 2005. The presence of this subspecies  here has been crucial in enabling the translocated northern white rhino (NWR) from Dvur Kralove Zoo in Czech Republic in 2009  to settle into the African climate. Females will be instrumental in NWR recovery program, to be used as surrogates to carry a pure NWR embryo through IVF.  This a pioneering project led by scientists of the Biorescue Project, Leibniziz- Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Kenyan Wildlife Service, Wildlife Research & Training Institute and Ol Pejeta.
